HOW TO EMPOWER YOUR EMPLOYEES TODAY
Empowerment is a management theory which discuss to provide employees the authority to take some independent, self directed decisions on their job activities .Expectations of this philosophy is to develop more productive, contributing, self motivated and happy employee base withing the organization (Kasanoff, 2016). But this varies based on the job role and the organizational culture.
As the first step of employee empowerment journey ,leaders should demonstrate that they value the employees in terms of words, actions including body language and facial expression without considering who those employees perform on their current job. Then the leadership can share the organizational vision, mission and strategic plans to their followers ,so the employees feel that they are part of something big (Heathfield, 2019).
Each manager can get the involvement of the team that reports to him when setting department level goals and plannings, which will be empowered those employees to shape their own functions without under close supervision. The next most important element is the trust among the leader and the followers.Leader should believe that employees make the right decision and do the right thing. This can be improved by providing the managers clear expectations, so the employee can focus on their task and accomplish results without worrying about a second guessing.
Leaders always should assume that the problem is the system, not the person.By asking what is the wrong with the system instead of asking whats wrong with the person can strengthen the employee empowerment across the organization (Lee et.al., 2018). Employees need the frequent feedback in terms of meeting expectations and the improvement points. This can be done by providing a communicating space by listing to them and asking them questions.
Most importantly employee empowerment doesn't work properly for employees with routine ,job tasks and this can be ended up with more harm than good. Therefore the leadership should study and understand the organizational culture, employee base, job roles and external environment ,before implementing empowerment concept withing the organization.
